Curriculum Intent

 
At Pennine Way the curriculum intent is one where students are enriched with the knowledge and the skills to create their own personal pathways. Allowing them to question, to comprehend and to evaluate the why's of today and to predict, to plan for and to voice the what-ifs of tomorrow. 
 

ENGLISH 

 

READING

As a school we place great importance on the teaching and learning of reading. Every child has a weekly guided reading session where they read a book with other children of the same reading ability and complete oral and written comprehension type activities. Every child takes an individual reading book home daily to read to their family and will read to an adult regularly in school.Parents are encouraged to make comments about the reading process in the home-school diary. We have a range of books for the children to choose which are graded according to the Reading Intervention Levels up to level 27 after which the children can choose from a wide range of high-quality free reading books. The school library van visits school once a term and we also have collections of topic resources on loan from the library. We have a library in school which the children can use to research topics and we also use Kindles and computers to support this learning process.

Phonics and spelling also play a huge part in the teaching of reading.

PHONICS-FOUNDATION AND KEY STAGE ONE

As a school we follow the phonic scheme Song of Sounds to inform our planning and teaching of phonics. Daily lessons teach the children letter sounds (phonemes) and the names of letters. As well as hearing and saying the sounds in words children need to learn how to blend and segment words and to understand how letters or groups of letters are written (graphemes) .Children are taught in their class although teaching assistants teach intervention groups for those children who need extra support.

TRICKY WORDS

Words which are not easily blended are learned by sight. We will send home these words to be learned matched to the Letters and Sounds phases so that children can practise reading them easily and at speed.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

In both Key Stage1 and  2 we teach daily spelling and grammar sessions where children are given opportunities to apply new skills in a wide range of reading and writing activities. We follow the new national curriculum which can be viewed online.

MATHEMATICS

The teaching of Mathematics across the school is based upon the new National Curriculum for all years.  Children are taught to use and apply mathematical skills in real-life, fun and practical situations, making the most of the outdoors wherever possible. Activities are differentiated as appropriate for all ability level and the curriculum is made relevant to children’s interests and other curriculum subjects. Daily Maths lessons vary in length, but usually last for 60 minutes (including a 15-minute mental maths session).  

As a school, we are working hard to improve the mental maths strategies of our pupils and to achieve this have adopted the Big Maths scheme. Big Maths is a teaching method that makes progress in maths easy and fun for all children. The scheme has been met with huge success across the UK and a number of other Carlisle schools have adopted the same policy. Pupils take part in a 'Big Maths, Beat That!' and ‘Learn Its’ challenge every week. The children follow a framework that guarantees numeracy progress and this framework is known as CLIC (Counting, Learn Its, It's Nothing New and Calculation). Our Foundation Unit are using ‘Little Big Maths’, which has the added step of ‘amounts.
