Personal Development Curriculum

Here at Pennine Way Primary School our Personal Development curriculum is delivered through the scheme ‘1Decision’. 1Decision supports personal development by equipping children with the key skills needed to support with their emotional wellbeing as well as providing them with information to keep them safe and healthy. We aim to create a climate of high expectations during PSHE lessons which provide children challenge in their thinking as they make decisions which could lead to different consequences. We aim to set high trust between pupils and staff to allow children to express their views and not be afraid to try. We want to build pupils confidence, resilience and perseverance and allow this to show across school.

Personal Development Curriculum Intent

At Pennine Way Primary School our intent is to help children to become more resilient learners as well as equipping them with the life skills needed to form good relationships with others. Personal development teaches children how families and relationships are presented in different ways and how these differences should be celebrated. Children will learn how to stay safe, both in person and online, and what to do and who to tell if they feel unsafe. We explore a range of themes throughout the year which allow children to become a safe, happy and confident member of our school community. Within Personal Development we also use NSPCC PANTS resources to support in safeguarding of pupils.

Personal Development Curriculum Map

Our Curriculum Map for Personal Development provides an overview of what is taught during each half term within each year group. Each year group covers 3 different themes per term. These have been planned to best support the needs of the pupils, for example, each year groups first theme is around ‘feelings and emotions’. Our Early Years curriculum is fully child-centred with themes being planned based on pupils current needs.

CPSHSRE Curriculum Impact

At Pennine Way we want our children to be safe and to feel safe and to know who to tell if they do not feel safe. It is vital that our children know the online risks to them and how to prevent these especially with social media being such an integral part of all children’s lives. We want our children to celebrate difference and be confident with who they are and be accepting of others, their family situations, religion or sexual orientation. Our children will leave school having a good understanding of their bodies, the proper names for their body parts, and the differences between girls and boys.  We want our children to leave our school well-rounded individuals who are resilient, empowered and have aspirations so that in their teenage and adult life they feel well both physically and mentally, and they achieve their best academically so that they can go on to have a career of their choice.
