Welcome to Nursery

At Pennine Way Primary School we have a large dedicated classroom (designed and provisioned by Early Excellence) and a large outside space specifically tailored for our nursery children. These provide a safe, exciting and stimulating environment that the children can explore, play, and learn in.

Our Nursery team are specialised in Early Years education and provide the children with nurturing and high-quality interactions. We believe that every child is unique, and at different points in their journey. Each child is assigned a Key Worker, who will support the children’s development and help them take the next step forward, with a nursery based qualified teacher taking overall responsibility.

Our Nursery curriculum adheres to The Early Years Framework and is based on Development Matters (which sets out pathways for child development) and skills we have identified as a school, that we believe are important for the children in our community to develop. These are categorised into 7 Areas of Development:

· Communication and Language,

· Personal, Social and Emotional,

· Physical Development,

· Literacy,

· Mathematics,

· Understanding the World,

· Expressive Arts and Design.

Our curriculum is ambitious but flexible. Each half term we cover specific themes, but we also follow children’s interests as this enhances and drives learning; it can also lead us on amazing journeys and exciting adventures.

Our Themes Are:

· Autumn 1 – My World

· Autumn 2 – Traditional Celebrations

· Spring 1 – Pets and Farm Animals

· Spring 2 – Growing Things

· Summer 1 – People Who Help Us

· Summer 2 – Adventures

The majority of the children’s learning takes place through continuous provision activities and play, with the children learning from the experiences they have. Our staff engage the children with high quality interactions that draw out learning and move children on to the next step of their development.

However, each day we also have more formal teaching sessions (using our Key Worker groups) in Phonics, Maths, and Literacy. We also have specific sessions each week based around the other Areas of Learning.

Within class we have lots of story times as exposure to stories stretches children’s vocabularies, expands their horizons, increases their imagination, and extends their ability to learn. We also spend lots of time singing nursery rhymes and exploring music.

P.E. in Nursery is done through continuous provision and play. There is no need for a separate P.E. kit. However, the children have access to the outdoor areas continuously throughout all weather conditions, so waterproof coats and wellington boots are essential.

We believe that what children experience in nursery creates strong long lasting impressions, which the children take with them into the rest of their school lives. It is our aim to make these experiences the best they can possibly be!

At Pennine Way Primary School we offer a number of 30 free hour places a week (for 38 weeks – term time only) for 3 and 4 year old children, which eligible parents can apply for. This is an additional 15 hours per week entitlement, to the existing 15 hours free early education place.

These hours are for use between 9 am and 3 pm during term time. With morning sessions running from 9 am until 12 noon and full day sessions running from 9 am until 3 pm. Additional sessions can be purchased, if availability allows, for children not accessing the 30 hours funding. These cost £8 per additional session.

At Pennine Way Primary School we also offer a Breakfast Club for nursery children, which runs from 8.30 am until 9 am. There is a cost of £3 for this, which can be booked on School Hub.

If you would like to find out more about our nursery provision, then please contact the school office. We would be delighted to show you around the school.
