Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
HELLO FROM YEAR 1.
Year 1 is an exciting transition year where children build on the strong foundations developed in the Early Years while becoming increasingly confident learners within the National Curriculum. Our approach recognises that children learn best through a balance of structured teaching and purposeful provision, ensuring learning is engaging, meaningful and developmentally appropriate.
Year 1 Curriculum
In Year 1, children follow the National Curriculum, with teaching carefully planned to ensure full coverage of all subject areas and opportunities to link learning to real-life experiences and the world around them.
Learning is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, with regular opportunities for retrieval and application to help children remember more and do more.
We aim to provide opportunities for your children to be geographers, writers, musicians and mathematicians, to name but a few.
Reading in Year 1
Reading is at the heart of everything we do in Year 1, as it helps children grow in confidence, develop their language skills and access all areas of learning. We encourage a real love of reading by giving children plenty of chances to enjoy books just for fun, including choosing reading-for-pleasure books from our school library, visits from the library van and sharing a story together every day.
At the same time, we gently prepare children for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check through daily phonics lessons, supported by targeted interventions and phonics clubs where needed. We also work closely with parents through meetings and guidance, and encourage regular reading at home, so that children feel supported, confident and excited about becoming independent readers.
Continuous Provision in Year 1
To support a smooth transition from Early Years, we use Continuous Provision as an important part of learning in Year 1. This approach allows children to revisit and deepen key skills independently, while still benefiting from high-quality adult input.
Continuous Provision is links child-led learning opportunities to skills they are taught in English, Maths and the wider curriculum. It provides opportunities for children to:
-
Apply and consolidate taught skills in a meaningful context
-
Develop independence, resilience and confidence
-
Extend learning through exploration, problem-solving and creativity
-
Practise key skills such as reading, writing, counting and reasoning
-
Enhance social skills and support communication and language
Year 1 is a key stage in children’s development, and we are committed to supporting each child as they continue to grow as learners. Our balanced approach ensures children feel secure, challenged and motivated, while building the skills they need for a successful future.
We welcome regular communication with families and encourage parents and carers to contact us with any questions or queries.
