EYFS Curriculum

At Pennine Way Primary School we are passionate about the importance of Early Years. We believe that Early Years education is essential in helping set the foundations for how a child will develop in the future. Positive experiences in early years education, have positive impacts upon:

• How children feel about school, and learning in general.

• Academic achievement

• Behaviour

• Emotional and physical wellbeing

• Health

• Independence and resilience

We have an Early Years team that is enthusiastic and knowledgeable; alongside an environment that is safe and exciting where children learn, develop, and have fun; with a curriculum that is progressive, engaging, and relevant.

We believe in a holistic approach to learning, where every child is treated as a unique individual and supported in developing social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills. We not only prepare the children for entering KS1, but we also help the children develop fundamental skills and attitudes that will prepare them for life.

Our Early Years curriculum is based on:

· United Learning

· Little Wandle Phonics

· Moving to Write and I’m a Clever Writer

· Master the Curriculum and Mastering Number

· 1 Decision

· P.E. Planning

The skills the children learn are categorised into 7 Areas of Development:

• Communication and Language,

• Personal, Social and Emotional,

• Physical Development,

• Literacy,

• Mathematics,

• Understanding the World,

• Expressive Arts and Design.

These skills are taught through a mixture of formal teaching, guided activities during play, and independent learning through play. Our staff engage the children with high quality interactions throughout the day, these draw out learning and move children on to the next step of their development.

Our curriculum is ambitious but flexible. Each half term we cover specific themes, but we also follow children’s interests as this enhances and drives learning; it can also lead us on amazing journeys and exciting adventures.

We also work with Smile4Life (an NHS programme aiming to reduce tooth decay in children and promote the foundations for future oral health). Healthy teeth are an important part in children’s development; both in terms of their general physical and mental wellbeing; in addition, unhealthy teeth can also impact speech development.
