As a school we place great importance on the teaching and learning of reading. Every child has a weekly whole class guided reading session where they read a text and complete oral and written comprehension type activities. Every child takes an individual reading book home daily to read to their family and will read to an adult regularly in school. Parents are encouraged to make comments about the reading process in the home school diary. We have a range of books for the children to choose which are graded according to phonics ability/book bands and Accelerated Reader. The school library van visits school once a term and we also have collections of topic resources on loan from the library. Phonics and spelling also play a huge part in the teaching of reading.


Phonics-Foundation and key Stage One


Within Key Stage One we follow the phonics scheme Song of Sounds to inform our planning and teaching of phonics. Daily lessons teach the children letter sounds (phonemes) and the names of letters .As well as hearing and saying the sounds in words children need to learn how to blend and segment words and to understand how letters or groups of letters are written (graphemes) .Children are taught in their class although teaching assistants teach intervention groups for those children who need extra support.


Tricky words


Words which are not easily blended are learned by sight. We will send home these words home so that children can practise reading them easily and at speed.

Spelling and Grammar


In Key Stage 2 we teach daily spelling and grammar sessions where children are given opportunities to apply new skills in a wide range of reading and writing activities. We follow the National Curriculum which can be viewed online.




As a school we place great importance on developing writing skills. We have a long term plan for each year group which ensures coverage of genres of writing. We introduce pre cursive writing in Reception and begin joined up writing from year One .Emphasis is placed on accurate spelling of common exception words and from year 1 all children have access to dictionaries.






The teaching of Mathematics across the school is based upon the new National Curriculum for all years.  Children are taught to use and apply mathematical skills in real-life, fun and practical situations, making the most of the outdoors wherever possible. Activities are differentiated as appropriate for all ability level and the curriculum is made relevant to children’s interests and other curriculum subjects. Daily Maths lessons vary in length, but usually last for 60 minutes (including a 15-minute mental maths session).  


As a school, we are working hard to improve the mental maths strategies of our pupils and to achieve this have adopted the Big Maths scheme. Big Maths is a teaching method that makes progress in maths easy and fun for all children. The scheme has been met with huge success across the UK and a number of other Carlisle schools have adopted the same policy. Pupils take part in a 'Big Maths, Beat That!' and ‘Learn Its’ challenge every week. The children follow a framework that guarantees numeracy progress and this framework is known as CLIC (Counting, Learn Its, It's Nothing New and Calculation). Our Foundation Unit are using ‘Little Big Maths’, which has the added step of ‘amounts.

Critical content has been identified in each subject area to ensure that our curriculum is adjusted in a way that ensures a broad and balanced curriculum with the best possible outcomes for all of our pupils. Through identifying and addressing the critical content needed to build the foundations for learning in each subject area, we can ensure that the best support possible is put in place for all pupils to fill these gaps in knowledge and secure the building blocks for the next steps in their education.
