Year 1

HELLO FROM MISS. WATSON, MR. QUEEN,  AND MR. MASON IN YEAR 1.

Welcome to Year 1!

We are lucky enough to work with 5-6 year olds 5 days a week and it’s nothing short of interesting!

We believe that Year 1 is such an important milestone for these children. There is a huge jump in expectations and change of routines from Reception and we spend a large proportion of time preparing your child ready for the exciting challenges of Year 2 too!

As the Year 1 team, we promise to make sure that every child in our care is safe, given equal opportunities and has a smile on their face as much as possible! We know that for parents and carers, it can be a daunting time but rest assured, after you leave, magical and inspirational things happen to all of your children. We understand how important it is to share this with you all so please check out our school Facebook page and we will continue to communicate with you face – to – face, via text message/email or through green letters! If you would like to contact us directly, you can email any Year 1 member of staff at year1@pennineway.cumbria.sch.uk

Each evening your child will bring a school book home as well as their weekly Reading for Pleasure book. Because of this, please send your child to school with a school bag to help them transport their belongings safely.
Each day your child will need a water bottle, a coat and a lunch box or their lunch ordered via Lunchshop!

On the days of PE, children should come to school in their PE kit.

Throughout the year you will be invited to parent’s meetings covering various topics which may help you in supporting your child further. We also hold ‘Story and Stay’ where you can come into the classroom and read with your child from 8:30-8:45 once a week – we will inform you of this via text message.

A large focus for Year 1 this year is phonics because it will support your child’s reading but children also take part in the official phonics screening testing later in the year. One of the parent’s meetings will cover this but we may send resources home to help you and your child prepare. This is not to be a stressful experience so please don’t hesitate to ask us about this.

We’d like to thank you for your continued support as this really helps us to do our best.
